It is with profound sadness that we have learnt of the death of our dear colleague Ann Denis on February the 5th at the age of 74: our deepest condolences to family, friends and colleagues. Ann Denis was professor emerita at the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies since her retirement in 2009 Ann arrived at the University of Ottawa in 1973, and contributed enormously by teaching and mentoring countless cohorts of students. Collegial, and engaged in the administrative life of the university, she was Chair of the School on more than one occasion. Despite retirement, Ann remained active in the life of the School until her very last days.

Her research and publications focused on power relations within and between societies, particularly on the intersection of gender, ethnicity/race, and class with work, Internet use and education in Canada and the Commonwealth Caribbean, women (and men) studying engineering at university, and on intersectionality within feminisms. She participated generously on the editorial boards and/or executives of several national and international scholarly associations in sociology, ethnic relations and on women/gender, and remained an active member of the associations. She also continued to be active in the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women, including on its United Nations Committee and in its research activities.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 3rd, 2019, 2:00pm at First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue, Ottawa, ON K2A 4A1
