Mark Salter

I studied… (What? Where?)

After a degree in Great Books and Political Science, I took a Masters’ in International Relations at the London School of Economics and then a PhD at the University of British Columbia.

I began my teaching career (where, when?)

My first post was at the American University in Cairo, Egypt between 2000-2003. A pretty interesting time to be in the Middle East – and a fascinating experience to be teaching about globalization from a global city in a developing country.

I am researching or interested in researching…

After researching the politics of security in unexpected places, like passports, airports, borders, video games, and popular culture, and editing collections on surveillance, aviation security, research methods and new materialism, I’m turning towards engaging with Arctic security from a decolonial perspective.

The best part about my job

The best part about my job is mentoring and discussing career planning with colleagues and working with the VDRO team members to solve problems. Sometimes academe can have a long burn, and so it is really gratifying to create more immediate solutions.

What people don’t know about me…

What people don’t know about me is that I have an IATA certificate in Airport Security.

My favorite spot

My favorite spot for a mimosa is the old T3 Air Canada lounge at Heathrow (before the new terminal was built), but since the pandemic all those favorite spots are imaginary anyway.
