In honour of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Faculty of Social Sciences is proud to highlight the important work of our researchers in this field. Their research and expertise contribute to making the world more inclusive, accessible and welcoming for everyone.

Alexandre Baril
Associate Professor at the School of Social Work and prolific author, Alexandre Baril was selected by the Vice-Dean, Research to be co-champion of the Research Priority of Social Justice, Equity, Social Groups and Inclusion. His work, carried out from an intersectional perspective, is situated at the crossroads of gender, queer, trans, disability/crip/Mad studies, critical gerontology and critical suicidology. Stay tuned for the publication of his manuscript, entitled “Suicidism: A trans, queer, crip approach to rethinking (assisted) suicide”.
Virginie Cobigo
Virginie Cobigo wears many hats: Professor at the School of Psychology, researcher at the Centre for Research on Educational and Community Services (CRECS), CHEO Research Chair in Child and Youth Mental Health, and Executive Director of Open Collaboration for Cognitive Accessibility. She recently won the More Inclusion, Better Research: Inspiring Stories Competition, organized by the Office of the Vice-President, Research (OVPR). Her research aims to promote the social inclusion of persons with cognitive disabilities.
Michael Orsini
Full Professor jointly appointed to the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies and the School of Political Studies, Michael Orsini is currently completing a book manuscript on the role of emotions and stigma in three key policy fields. His substantive areas of interest include autism, HIV/AIDS and illnesses that affect marginalized people. He has published many articles in 2021, such as “Fat Acceptance as Social Justice” in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) and “The End of Exceptionalism or Exceptionalism by other Means? Unraveling the Contradictions of HIV/AIDS Governance in Canada” in Critical Policy Studies.
