Death of Sydney Afriat

Sydney Afriat, a former professor at the Department of Economics of the University of Ottawa, died on December 31, 2021 at the age of 96. Sydney Afriat was a full professor at the University of Ottawa between the years 1973 and 1991. He obtained a doctorate from Queen's College, Oxford in 1954. Before joining the University of Ottawa, he spent time at quite a few universities, including Cambridge, Princeton, Rice, Yale and Waterloo. After his retirement in 1991, he spent most of his time in Italy, notably at the University of Siena. Sydney Afriat was an internationally renowned economist. He wrote fifteen books and more than one hundred articles in mathematical economics, particularly in the areas of price indices and choice theory. He was a fellow of the prestigious Econometric Society. Sydney Afriat was of a difficult character. His relationships with his colleagues have sometimes been complicated, but the value of his scientific contributions is recognized by all.
