Michael Kempa

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Michael Kempa as Director of the Department of Criminology. His mandate is for three years, from July 1st, 2018 to June 30, 2021.

After a year as Interim Director and on the basis of the comments received from the members of the teaching staff, we are convinced that Professor Kempa will bring a valuable experience in the management and development of the Department and that he will be able to count on the support and cooperation of faculty members.

A social scientist with the spirit of an investigative journalist, Professor Kempa holds a Bachelor and a Master in Criminology from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Law from the Australian National University. His program of research draws upon political science, international relations, and sociological theory to address the ways in which states and non-state organizations variously conceive of and attempt to institutionalize "police power" in such domains as the economy, new forms of urban communal space, and international security. Trained in media through a Munk Fellowship in Global Journalism, University of Toronto, Dr. Kempa tries to take the results of his research to the broadest possible audience. He contributes written, spoken and audiovisual materials to such major news outlets as the Walrus Magazine, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, National Post, and Global and Mail, as well as academic publications in top-ranked social science journals.

We hope that you will join us in congratulating Professor Kempa, and wishing him the best of luck in his position at the Department of Criminology. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank him for his excellent work as Interim Director during the past year!
