Department of Economics
In late September, the Faculty of Social Sciences' 2010 Homecoming celebrations were hosted by the Department of Economics which organized a cocktail reception in honour of the unit's 55th anniversary.
The event took place on September 24, on the 12th floor of the Desmarais building. The Chair of the Department, Professor Victoria Barham, greeted each guest with warmth and enthusiasm. Alumni, former professors and staff joined existing Faculty members to mingle and share news and memories. More than a hundred guests were in attendance. Professor Gilles Grenier played an important part in recalling some of the Department's history and the crowd was a mix of faces, some older, some younger, some familiar and many new. In the background, a PowerPoint presentation projected a variety of photos capturing current student life.
The Faculty of Social Sciences also seized the opportunity to give Mr. Sam Boutziouvis, a distinguished guest at the event and a 1984 alumnus of the Department of Economics, the 2010 Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award. Marcel Mérette, Dean of the Faculty, presented the award to Sam and the recipient then pronounced a short speech in acceptance of the award while offering at the same time some reflections on the future of Canada and the World Economy.
