René Rozon: Winner of the 2012 Faculty of Social Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award

René Rozon, récipiendaire du prix de reconnaissance des diplômés 2012

The Faculty is proud to present this year’s Faculty of Social Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award to Mr. René Rozon (Political Science, ’62), founder of the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) and member of the Order of Canada.

Mr. Rozon grew up on Bruyère Street in Ottawa. After attending the University of Ottawa, he worked in the Office of the Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs, alongside the Right Honourable Jules Léger. He then went on to study art and film at the Université de Montréal and founded FIFA. Mr. Rozon still remains director of the festival thirty years after its creation.

Considered to be the leading festival of its type, FIFA took place over 10 days this year, from March 15 to 25, and featured more than 230 films, from 30 different countries. Audiences have been able to enjoy top-quality films, thanks primarily to FIFA's permanent representatives in Paris, London and New York, who are constantly on the lookout for new talent, as well as to the many relationships the festival has forged with art and film circles worldwide.

René Rozon's passion, and his vision, have been formally recognized in the past. In 2002, he was named a member of the Order of Canada, in honour of his determination and his contributions to arts and culture. However, 2012 has been a particularly rewarding year for this alumnus, who celebrates three anniversaries this year: the 10th anniversary of this prestigious nomination, the 30thanniversary of FIFA and the 50th anniversary of his graduating class of 1992.

Mr. Rozon gracefully accepted his award as well as our invitation to be our Guest of Honour for the official opening of the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Art Gallery. On the same day, a reception was organized in his honour.

Once again, the Faculty of Social Sciences wishes to offer its most sincere congratulations to Mr. Rozon for all of his accomplishments.
