Admission Requirements and Administrative Procedures for Field Research Courses

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for these courses, you must meet certain requirements:

Undergraduate level:

When applying and during the semester preceding the Field Research Course:

  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Must be registered full time, in an Honours Bachelor offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Must have completed 54 university credits (by May - preceding the date of departure).
  • You must submit your application to the courses by completing the online form by the prescribed date.
  • Sign the Code of Conduct, commit to attending the pre-departure trainings
  • Commit to purchase the airline ticket and travel insurance according to the Faculty of Social Sciences criteria;
  • Commit to leave with the other participants on the same flight (no exception)
  • You must meet the specific language requirements for the course (written and oral ability in French or English depending on the language of the course). Spanish is a requirement for courses that take place in Latin America for the purpose of the field research.  
  • If you are registered in the coop program, you must advise them of your interest of participating in the Field Research Course before handing in your admission request.

Graduate Students

  • Must be registered in a M.A. program at the Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Must inform their department and seek approval from the thesis/MRP supervisor to register for the field research course
  • You must submit your application to the courses by completing the online form by the prescribed date
  • Sign the Code of Conduct,
  • Attend ALL the pre-departure trainings
  • Purchase the travel insurance according to the Faculty of Social Sciences criteria;
  • Commit to leave with the other participants on the same flight (no exception)
  • You must meet the specific language requirements for the course (written and oral ability in French or English depending on the language of the course). Spanish is a requirement for courses that take place in Latin America for the purpose of the field research.  
  • If you are registered in the coop program, you must advise them of your interest of participating in the Field Research Course before handing in your admission request.
Application Process

You must complete the online registration form for the Field Research Course before November 16 2017. Please read the form carefully before completing it. You can choose up to two Field Research Courses. When you have submitted your online application you will received a confirmation of admission request e-mail. Please keep this e-mail as it is proof that you have submitted the online application before the deadline.  Please note there is a maximum of fifteen (15) students per course.  Priority is given to students for which the course can count in their program of study.

If you are accepted into the course, you will receive an e-mail (by December 22 informing you of the next steps. You will need to confirm your participation by a return e-mail no later than January 9, 2018.

Should you confirm your participation, you must make your first payment for costs linked to the course  of $1,000 by January 22nd or 23rd 2018.

Documents to be Completed Before Departure

In addition to your course registration form, you will have to prepare certain documents before your departure. Please submit the following by the stipulated dates see Important dates section:

Course Registration at the University of Ottawa

Undergraduate Students:

If selected, you must register to one of the following six (6) credits course code:

SCS3210 (if you have completed 54 credits by April 2018)

SCS4210 (if you have completed 81 credits by April 2018)

ECH4210 (only for student in the Conflict Studies and Human Rights program)

Registration will take place at room FSS3001. We will make an appointment with you to complete the registration.

Graduate Students

If selected, you will register for a three credits course with your department.  Your department will register you for the course.


ALL STUDENTS:

The course will count for the summer semester. Courses may count as additional credits.  Undergraduate and Graduate students will not be able to participate in the June convocation as  because they must maintain their registration throughout the summer semester.  You will then graduate in October.

Please note that if you have unpaid late tuition fees listed in your student account, we will not be able to register you. If you are not registered, you cannot leave to participate in the course.  You will then be financially responsible for any costs resulting from this situation.

Travel and Accommodation

Travel

The Faculty will handle the procurement of airline tickets along with everything related to your visit during the field study course.

Travel insurance: The travel insurance will be bought with your airline ticket.  No other travel insurance will be accepted.

Please note that the duration of your trip, should you extend your stay,  will impact on your flight and insurance costs.

The departure date will be the same for all the students in the group.  This means that you will all be on the same departure flight.  Your return date however is up to you. 
 

Accommodations

We will make arrangements for your stay in your host country. In some countries, you will pay for the onsite meals and housing  in advance. In some countries, you will be notified of the amount to bring for food and housing costs.

You are required to settle the costs (airline tickets, insurance and food and accommodations if indicated) before your departure based on the payment breakdown.  See Important dates below.

Costs Associated with Field Research Courses

Fees are payable before the start of the course at the prescribe dates. Some prices are subject to change. Costs may vary according to prices at the moment of purchase, the length of your stay, etc. See under course listing below for approximate costs.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are separate from the costs listed below.  These fees vary according to your status and your program. For more information on tuition fees, please consult the Office of the Registrar.  Tuition fees are to be paid according to the dates set by the registrar.

Vaccines

  • Vaccines cost is between $250 and $1000 (according to the country and recommendations of your family doctor).  Please consult the Travel.gc.ca website to find out the Canadian Government recommendations according to your host country and the Center for disease control and prevention for more information.

Australia

This course is offered in English to undergraduate students.

  • Accommodations: $1200.00
  • Airline ticket and travel insurance: $1800.00
  • E-visa: $20.00
  • Onsite Excursion: $340.00

  • Tuition fees (according to University deadlines)

To be paid onsite:

  • Food: around $850
  • personal expenses

Germany

This course is offered in English to Masters students. Some 4th year undergraduate students may be accepted. 

 To be paid before you leave:

  • Accommodation and transportation: $1000.00
  • Airline ticket, train and travel insurance: $1300.00

To this you must add:  

  • Tuition fees (according to University deadlines)

To be paid onsite:

  • Food: around $880.00
  • personal expenses (souvenirs, etc.)

Mexico 

This course if offered in French to undergraduate students. Spanish is required for field research.

To be paid before you leave:

  • Airline ticket and travel insurance : $800.00
  • Food, accommodations and onsite excursion: $2050.00

To this you must add:

  • Tuition fees (according to University deadlines)
  • Visa
  • Vaccines

To be paid onsite:

  • personal expenses (souvenirs etc.)

Senegal

This course is offered in French to undergraduate students. 

To be paid before your leave

  • Food and accommodations, onsite academic excursions: $1100.00
  • Airline ticket and travel insurance: $1800.00

  • Vaccines
  • Visa

To be paid onsite:

Taiwan

This course is offered in English to undergraduate students.

To be paid before your leave

  • Accommodations, and transportation: $1500.00
  • Airline ticket and travel insurance: $1800.00

To be paid onsite:

  • food
  • personal expenses (souvenirs, etc.)
Passports and Visas

You are responsible for securing your passport and/or visa. You must have a valid passport before leaving the country as well as a visa for the country you are visiting, if necessary. You can begin the process of obtaining these documents once you are accepted into the course. Be sure to leave enough time to receive your passport and/or visa. You must provide us with a photocopy of your passport. For information on the necessary steps, consult the Passport Canada website.

If you plan to travel after the Field Research Course, you must make sure to have the appropriate travel documents.  Please consult the links below and contact the appropriate authorities of the host country.

Nationals from other countries are responsible to undertake the appropriate steps to find out what are the requirements and fees, according to their status, for travel documents in the host country.

Bursary and Financial Aid

If you are accepted, you will receive financial aid from the Faculty of Social Sciences in the amount of $500. These amounts will be deposited in your student account once the course is completed.
